About Descanso Gardens

Descanso Gardens was originally part of the vast Rancho San Rafael Spanish land grant. In the 1930s and 1940s, newspaper publisher Manchester Boddy developed the property into a world-class botanical collection, with particular emphasis on camellias — the garden's collection remains one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The property became a public garden in 1953 and has since grown into one of Los Angeles County's most treasured cultural institutions. Its event program balances accessibility with preservation, hosting a limited number of celebrations each year to protect the garden's character.
